About the Book
Mary Khouri’s Veiled Horizons: An American Woman’s Trek into the Heart of Arabia is a compelling memoir that traces her journey from a privileged life in Washington, D.C. to the heart of the Arab Gulf where, amid political unrest, she discovers generosity, fellowship, and her genuine self.
The story begins in 1960s California, where Mary, living a typical suburban life, is drawn to diverse cultures—From the powwows and sweat lodges of her Piikani ancestral land to dancing in the pool with her European grandmother in childhood singing German songs. This curiosity deepens in her 20s when she meets Nabil, a Lebanese native, at an East Coast university.
After 17 years in Washington, D.C., Mary, in her early 40s, grows restless and longs for a broadened perspective. Despite the confusion of those around her, including Nabil, she feels called to move to Saudi Arabia where women are cloaked in black. Convincing Nabil that she needs a fresh worldview, Mary embarks on a journey that will transform her life.
Despite logistical challenges and unexpected hardships, including terrorist attacks and serious illness, Mary’s open heart and spirit lead her to discover the warmth and hospitality of the Arab Gulf. She embraces the region’s communal meals, the focus on family and faith, and the cultural rhythms of “people time.” Over 17 enriching years in the Arab Gulf, Mary’s connection to the Middle East deepens, shaping her understanding of life and herself.
In 2017, Mary and Nabil return to the U.S., but Mary’s bond with the Arabian Peninsula remains strong. Like Nabil, she continues to navigate the joys and struggles of living between two cultures.
